5 Tips for Keeping your Child Motivated at Maths

Is your child unmotivated in the subject of mathematics? It is very common for a child or person to withdraw from any subject they don’t have a full understanding of. At Mathnasium of Country Hills we help to explain the fundamentals of the subject, and make sure that your child fully understands the concepts and theories in order to apply them to the subject and grasp the concepts in a fun and useable way.

There are a few ways to help your child maintain motivation in the subject

1. Be able to fully understand the concepts

It is important that your child fully understands the concepts theories and formulas that are required in the subject. Knowing what to use, and when to solve a specific mathematical problem is the first challenge. Being able to apply the correct formula is the next step. There is a lot of mental retention required in mathematics, and this is best learned through repetition. However if your child is repeating the same challenges unsuccessfully over and over, this can not only be very harmful for their confidence but will also make it hard for them to be able to keep up in class and have trust in the skills that they are learning.

Regularly practicing mathematical theories and problems with success will help your child to see positive results, to boost their confidence and help them to believe that they can solve the problems. Jumping ahead too fast can cause a challenge for your child if they haven’t fully grasped what is being asked of them at their current level.
At Mathnasium Of Country Hills, we make sure that your child fully understands the problems before progressing to the next level, and helping them to build confidence in their mathematical skills.

2. Remain focussed and keep the problems in a relatable context

Mathematics for some, can seem an entirely unrelatable topic. There are some more obvious ways where we can see how math is important in our day to day life, however the more intricate and challenging problems can sometimes seem so disconnected from anything we can relate to, so it can be hard for your child to connect with and become interested in solving the challenges.

At Mathnasium of Country Hills in NE Calgary, we keep the topic relatable and engaging so that your child feels more interested in solving the challenges as opposed to just seeing it as re arranging numbers. This will help the learning process as well as aid in helping your child to retain the theories to be able to apply them independently of our math tutors in the future.

3. Understand why math is important. Discuss career goals and learn why your child may need math to pursue a life dream

Having an understanding of why we need a solid understanding of the foundation of mathematics is really important for your child. Getting a solid grip on the subject early on will help them to continue to keep up in class and be able to pursue the goals and dreams they have. It is so common for youth to drop out of following their exact career goal as they couldn’t achieve the grade required in the subject of Mathematics. This is highly unfortunate, as it is a life changing moment for many.

By making sure your child has a firm understanding of the subject early on and overcoming any blocks as soon as they appear, will reduce chances of your child falling behind and struggling to keep up. This will allow them to maintain their confidence in themselves and the subject and keep a clear goal ahead of them instead of a fear of looming failure.

Our math tutors work with children at all levels, and whether it is to help support or supplement their learning before any challenges arise, or help them to regain their confidence and mathematical knowledge, we will help to get them back on track and following their dreams in an engaging and enjoyable way.

4. Keep the learning enjoyable

It is key that learning is enjoyable! The best results are always achieved if someone is enjoying what they are doing. This applies to everyone, especially children and youth. The reward of actually enjoying the challenges and seeing positive results through achieving the correct answer, in itself can be an enjoyable experience.

At Mathnasium of Country Hills in NE Calgary, our focus is to make the learning experience enjoyable and engaging. Even when your child is struggling, it is our job to make sure they can be reintroduced to the subject in a way that is clear for them and allows them to achieve success.

5. Reward the results with a sense of achievement and accomplishment

This will come with time, as your child builds their confidence, starts to see the positive results and learns to trust that they can independently solve the mathematical problems and challenges set out for them. It is important to acknowledge their progress and success along the way. We take pride in supporting our clients, and making sure they realise how far they have come every step of the way.

Our NE Calgary math tutoring centre offers fun and engaging tutoring from encouraging experienced staff. We work closely with your child to get to know them, understand their learning patterns and teach them in the best style for their current level of understanding.
