How much can you make as a math tutor?

Compared to 10 or 20 years ago, many families are turning to the help of private tutors to help their children achieve desired grades or to help keep learning momentum for a child that is excelling in the subject. The one subject that would appear to be the most needed, and in the highest demand, is math tutoring. Math is a challenging subject for many as well as a cumulative subject so a through understanding is imperative in order for a student to progress in the subject. This means there is an increased requirement for private math tutors and tutoring centres are becoming busier than ever. If you are skilled in this subject and enjoy sharing your skills and knowledge becoming a math tutor is a great way to either supplement and income or progress into a career with a math learning centre such as Mathnasium. But how much does a math tutor make and how much can you make as a math tutor?

This entirely depends on your level of experience and teaching skills. Perhaps you are a recent graduate or have been teaching math for years in schools. The opportunities for math tutors vary widely depending on many different aspects that we will look at in this article.

As classes get bigger and the student to teacher ratio continues to grow, students who need extra help with math can find themselves lost in the shuffle—they need help from a trusted source for that extra level of understanding. Mathnasium learning centres help students at all levels learn to confidently understand mathematics in a supportive and encouraging way.

What is Mathnasium and how was it formed?

Larry Martinek graduated college in 1974 and began teaching in schools in the Los Angeles area. To his horror, he realized that all he was doing was repair work with the students. As a teacher, he found it frustrating that he was working with kids who were well below grade level by the time they got to high school. In his role, his efforts were largely centered around getting students up to the grade level they should be at instead of taking them further than that grade level.

After the birth of his son Nic in 1980, Larry looked for ways to discuss math ideas with Nic that were beyond his years. Larry decided to change the language around teaching math, and his vision became the mission statement for Mathnasium: “Teach children math in a way that makes sense to them.”

Parents seek math tutors for various reasons. The most common being for a way to help improve their children’s grades and keep them on track with the curricular demands. At Mathnasium we don’t just dig for the grades, but make sure that your child understands the concepts instead of just repeating learned methods in an attempt to get the correct answer.

The amount a math tutor can charge varies greatly and so do the services provided. Whether it is a school friend or neighbor who is helping your child, a teachers assistant working for extra credit or a certified mathematician who also coaches. At Mathnasium our tutors all have one thing in common. Not only do they all have a solid background, education and understanding of mathematics, but they are also good teachers. You can know a subject incredibly well but if you don’t have a passion for sharing the knowledge and know various different ways of sharing  and communicating the information there can be challenges in making the learning process easy for your child.

The tutors at Mathnasium know how to share their skills and knowledge in digestible and understandable ways making the subject enjoyable and rewarding to our students.
A one size fits all approach does not fit all. All children learn differently. At Mathnasium we take that into account and work closely with your child to determine their learning style. If your child doesn’t understand a concept, we will try explaining in a different way, and then in another way, until we find the teaching style that matches their learning style. This is a skill that many skilled mathematicians may not have.  It is a huge advantage of a math tutor to have good teaching and interpersonal skills.

Many parent’s do not have the luxury of time to spend with their child working on homework for extended periods of time. Family time is valuable, and there are so many extra curricular programs and projects that kids are doing these days, meaning that any spare time should be spend enjoying relaxation and togetherness. Not fighting over math homework! That is where Mathnasium can help you too! We can help your chid learn in a low pressure environment with out fear of either person disappointing or overwhelming the other.

When you are paying for a service you are paying for results. At Mathnasium we value your trust in our service. At Mathnasium, tutoring costs will vary from child to child. We estimate approximately $200-$400 per month for regular tutoring.
